This study provides sorely needed insights into the spatial and temporal variability in marram grass traits in relation to aeolian sand transport. This information will be highly relevant to developing and refining coastal dune formation models.

Understanding and modeling plastic transport in rivers is crucial because rivers act as major conduits for plastic waste from land to ocean. The study presents a model that provides insights into how plastics move through river systems. This work not only advances scientific understanding of pollutant dynamics but also supports environmental management, and helps protect aquatic ecosystems from the escalating threat of plastic pollution.

This paper presents a new way of quantifying geometries of drainage networks, moving beyond river long profiles to explore the complexity of planform branching river networks. Using the proposed length asymmetry metric, the paper demonstrates that complexity is correlated with landscape aridity, where arid landscapes have less complex networks compared to humid ones, suggesting this metric could be a new way of exploring the impact of climate on Earth's topography.

Nghiem et al. calibrate and validate floc settling velocity models in freshwater, highlighting the controls on rates of sedimentation and organic carbon burial. The findings resolve discrepancies between observations and Stokes law-based models, which rely on floc characteristics like diameter, permeability, and fractal properties. This research advances our understanding of fine particle dynamics and their role in landscape evolution.

The paper presents a new approach for reduced effort dune modelling that will be of interest to a broad audience across the geosciences.

Many previous studies have examined the transfer of organic carbon in river systems within suspended sediment (fine particles carried in suspension making the water appear muddy etc..), however, few have looked at how much carbon is transported with bedload (coarser sand and pebbles that bounce along the base of the channel). This paper looks at the fluxes of carbon in the bedload and finds they are a far smaller percentage than that carried as suspended load, but may be more important for long term sinks or stores of carbon as they are more readily deposited in sediments that may become buried for a considerable period of time.

River meandering is a long standing source of interest for scientists interested in how the Earths surface is shaped. Here, Noh et al., use a novel probablistic approach to create geomorphic risk maps where areas that have the potential for meandering can be assessed in an arguably more rigorous way than before.

The transition between ripples and dunes dependent upon sediment and flow conditions has been classically represented with a phase space diagram differentiating between the different bedforms based on these drivers. This work, importantly, introduces the role of clay content within the sediment and shows how this shifts these fundamental long standing relationships.

Do earthquakes result in higher levels of sediment in rivers in the years following the event? There are several reasons to believe this could be the case. Previous studies have even provided evidence of increased sediment loads in mountainous areas after major earthquakes. However, a study by Graf et al. challenges this perspective. They demonstrate that despite the thousands of landslides triggered by the 2015 Gorkha Earthquake in Nepal, there were only minimal increases in coarse sediment in river channels during the subsequent years. Instead, the study reveals a different story. In June 2021, a single, exceptionally heavy rainfall event mobilized large volumes of sediment, leading to riverbed elevation by as much as 12 meters. This effect greatly overshadowed any sedimentary impact left by the earthquake along the river corridor. The study underscores that earthquake evidence may not always be found in the sedimentary records of alluvial areas. In high-mountainous regions, records of riverbed elevation may be strongly influenced by unique and localized events.

Multiple techniques are used to monitor the collapse of an Alpine landslide in the United States. It is shown that the landslide was moving rapidly pre-failure. Given that the frequency of extreme events is likely to increase with future climate change, additional monitoring of Alpine regions is essential to limit hazards from future Alpine mass movements.

This paper may be of wider interest as it provides an important quantification of the rates of cliff retreat for the chalk cliff coasts of Southern England and Northern France. This is the first time we have been able to look back at this level of detail and reconstruct how this coastline has changed and retreated.

Melting permafrost in high mountain areas represents a significant climate change driven hazard. This research shows the importance of this using novel photogrammetric methods coupled with a long observational record.

Understanding how sediment moves in rivers is fundamental to the shape of our landscapes and how they evolve. A key part of this understanding is measuring the size and shape of cobbles, pebbles and grains in the bed of a river. Often this measuring task is laborious and carried out by hand. However, this paper presents code and describes a method for measuring this using 3d point cloud data (from a laser scan for example) enabling the automation and rapid measurement.
